Backup InBloom to a remote location

With a number of users accessing their databases off of laptops, securing your data as well as ensuring you have backup copies in case of fire, flood, or theft has quickly become of tantamount importance.  InBloom recommends an industry standard backup solution that leaves your data securely managed by companies that are the best in the business and that do nothing else but backup.

You can use the free version of MozyHome (which includes 2GB of space), the MozyHome Unlimited version (which lets you backup all of your computer data for $4.95/month) or MozyPro for business computers of Mozy for Mac or Windows to backup all of your InBloom v2 data in one easy step.  This can also be set up for InBloom version 1.2.x but backups of InBloom 2 will be significantly faster.

Note:  MozyHome is for personal, non-commercial use.  If you’re backing up a server or business computer, you’ll need MozyPro

To set this up, follow these easy steps:

  1. Register on Mozy.com (using just an email address and a password) for MozyHome Free, MozyHome Unlimited or MozyPro
  2. Download the Mozy software for Mac or Windows
  3. Doubleclick and install the .DMG (Mac) or .ZIP (Windows) file you just downloaded
  4. Close the installer and make sure the Start Mozy Assistant checkbox is checked
  5. Use Mozy’s key for encryption
  6. Once, you’ve set this up, Mozy will ask you which files you want to backup. Deselect all of the files selected by default
  7. Click on the Files and Folders tab and navigate to your InBloom folder, then open the Modules folder, then click and highlight the InBloom Data.fp7 file.  Check the box that says Backup InBloom Data.fp7 or Backup InBloom Data.IBL. (If you are using InBloom v1.2.x simply select the InBloom.fp7 or InBloom.IBL file in your InBloom folder instead)
  8. Mozy will not backup this file when InBloom is open, thus it is imperative that you leave your computer ON with InBloom completely closed in order for Mozy to backup your data.

You can use Mozy’s online tools and software tools to manage how much of your upstream internet bandwidth the software uses and when it performs backups.  This can ensure that you don’t experience any slowdowns when using the internet, we recommend setting the Mozy software to backup on a daily schedule at midnight or whenever you plan on not using the computer.  This can be done in the software settings of Mozy.

Note that you can set up the same kind of backup process with any reputable backup service provider, such as CrashPlan.com or BackBlaze.com

Lastly, if you ever need to restore your InBloom data, all you need to do is download a fresh copy of InBloom from the InBloom website, download the backed up file from Mozy or whichever service you use, and overwrite the InBloom Data file in the Modules folder, of the InBloom folder – just like performing a soft upgrade (see the QuickTour movie instructions here).  You can be back up and running in under 5 minutes!
